Inspired by the rise of fake news, social media echo chambers and the displacement of truth, Orwell: Ignorance is Strength takes on a darker tone than Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You. With the power to both uncover and play with "the truth", players must decide for themselves how far they will go in the service of their country and whether the truth is sacred or ignorance is strength.

Inducted into “The Office”, a top-secret department of the government’s Orwell security program, players take on the role of an investigative agent during a time when civil unrest threatens a major political crisis between the Nation and neighboring country Parges.

Reporting directly to Orwell adviser, Ampleford, players are immediately tasked with uncovering the truth behind the escalating political tension and delving deep into the lives of Raban Vhart, editor of The People’s Voice and self-proclaimed guardian of truth, his wife, Karen, and his brother, Ilya, to uncover their potential involvement.

To assist with their task, players are given more agency through additional tools and mechanics, providing opportunities to control and impact the narrative. A new “time of day” system puts the player in time-sensitive situations, making who they chose to investigate and when, more important than ever. Players can also research more widely and dig deeper into citizen’s lives, gathering additional information they can use to influence the way events are reported and perceived by the public.

Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You--also known as Season One--was released as a weekly episodic series in October and November 2016 and is a surveillance thriller set in a fictional country called The Nation. Playing as themselves, the player was tasked with using the Orwell surveillance program to dig into the private and public communications of suspects in a series of terrorist attacks. The core question asked by the game was - “What would you do if you were Big Brother?”

Orwell was both commercially successful and critically acclaimed, winning multiple awards and receiving prestigious nominations including the IGF Excellence in Narrative and an Honorable Mention in the IGF Seamus McNally Grand Prize. Orwell: Ignorance is Strength takes place in parallel to the events of the first season but this time the player takes on the role of an insider with access to additional features of the Orwell program. Ignorance is Strength brings a darker tone and introduces new tools that provide the player with more control over how the investigation unfolds and even the ability to influence public opinion directly.

Orwell: Ignorance is Strength--also known as Season Two--launched on February 22 as a bi-weekly episodic series and is available on PC, Mac and Linux.

Episodes of season two, Orwell: Ignorance is Strength were released as follows:

Episode One: Thesis - February 22

Episode Two: Antithesis – March 8

Episode Three: Synthesis – March 22

  • Investigate the agitators: Enter the world of Orwell and join a top-secret department of agents known as “The Office” during a time of civil unrest and political tension. Profile persons of interest by exploring web pages, social media and private communications. Make connections. Find the information you need to know.
  • Uncover the truth: Separate the stories from the facts, the propagated myths and fake news from what’s really happening. Identify the hidden agendas of all those involved and expose them for what they are.
  • Manipulate the information: Use Orwell’s upgraded toolset and the information you have uncovered to create your own version of the truth. Then use that to gain influence and control over the situation.
  • End the threat: Expose the truth. Destroy the lives and influence of those who seek to bring harm to the government and diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries. Put an end to the civil unrest threatening to destroy the Nation.
