Special Educational Pricing for Hacknet in Celebration of Third Birthday

Today, in partnership with developer Team Fractal Alligator, we announced the launch of special educational pricing enabling organisations to purchase bulk licenses for Hacknet via itch.io. The launch coincides with the game’s third birthday.

Released on August 13, 2015, Hacknet has turned more than 1.4 million players into command line hackers to investigate the mysterious disappearance and death of a hacker called Bit. Hacknet Labyrinths, a major expansion adding 2-3 hours of story, launched in March 2017, followed shortly by Hacknet Extensions, a mod-support tool that enables players to create their own Hacknet campaigns, system networks, nodes, themes, music and story missions, which launched in May 2017.

Although simplified and abstracted, Hacknet is based on real cyber security principles and methods and is played using a terminal interface based heavily on unix. Hacknet’s developer, Matt Trobbiani, always hoped that the game could be used to teach concepts of cyber-security and has fielded requests from a number of schools and even government departments interested in custom versions for training military personnel.

“I find that sometimes, all you need to get interested in something is a taste of what it’s like to be really good at it,” said Matt Trobbiani, creator of Hacknet. “Cyber security can be very intimidating and hard to get into but I hope Hacknet will be used by educators to make it much more approachable.”

With the launch of educational pricing, any organisation seeking to use the game for teaching purposes will now be able to buy bulk licenses at half price on a self-service basis via itch.io. Based on an honour system, users simply select the price based number of machines they need to run the game on and are given access to DRM-free builds of the game. Both the original version and a special educational version that removes the mature language for younger students are provided.
